U.S. citizenship and passport applications. There are several pathways to citizenship based on your situation. We assist with the paperwork and process for naturalization and U.S. passport applications.

Pathways to U.S. citizenship

There are various pathways to obtaining U.S. citizenship. The most common include:

  • Naturalization – Available to lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who have met the required period of residence and other requirements under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
  • Citizenship by acquisition – Applies to children born outside the United States to U.S. citizen parents. Citizenship can be acquired at birth or after birth but before the age of 18 (including adopted children in some cases).

Naturalization subcategories include: (1) LPR of at least five years – the most common path; (2) spouse of a U.S. citizen – may qualify after three years as an LPR in some cases instead of five; (3) military service – special provisions under the INA for those serving or who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

The naturalization process

The process to become a U.S. citizen through naturalization generally consists of four main steps:

  1. File Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) – You must submit Form N-400 to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Supporting documents may include passport-style photos, a copy of your green card (Form I-551), driver's license, and marriage certificate (if applicable). Requirements vary by case.
  2. Attend biometrics appointment – About 4–6 weeks after filing, you will receive a notice to attend a mandatory biometrics appointment where your fingerprints are taken.
  3. Attend naturalization interview – You will be scheduled for an interview where you answer questions about your Form N-400 and take the English and civics tests. Bring required documents (e.g., green card, state ID, passport, marriage certificate if applicable, tax returns, evidence of continuous residence) as specified in your notice.
  4. Oath of Allegiance ceremony – After a successful interview, you will be scheduled to take the Oath of Allegiance. After the ceremony, you receive your Certificate of Naturalization.

The entire process usually takes about 10–14 months, though timelines vary by location.
