Change of status in the USA

Change of status (COS) is a process that allows foreign nationals who hold a nonimmigrant visa to change to another nonimmigrant category while remaining in the United States. For example, someone in B-2 tourist status may be able to change to F-1 student status.

Changing from one nonimmigrant status to another can be complex. Timing is critical; the change must be done carefully to avoid falling out of status during the transition.

Adjustment of status in the USA

Adjustment of status allows a nonimmigrant who is already in the United States to apply for lawful permanent residence (a green card) without leaving the country. For example, a person in F-1 student status who marries a U.S. citizen may be able to adjust status to permanent resident.
